Dubai Metro deploys drones to cut tunnel inspection time by 60pc
High-resolution imagery enhances predictive maintenance and operational planning
DUBAI – The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has taken a major step in operational innovation by deploying drone technology to inspect Dubai Metro tunnels.
In collaboration with metro operator Keolis MHI, the initiative marks a significant transformation in inspection practices, emphasising safety, efficiency, and digital advancement.
Dawood Alrais, Director of Rail Maintenance at the RTA’s Rail Agency, explained that the introduction of drones has reduced inspection durations by 60 percent. “Certain tunnel areas previously posed accessibility challenges and required advance entry arrangements. Today, drone technology allows these areas to be inspected with ease, offering a wider field of vision and high-resolution imagery that supports more accurate analysis,” he said.
Operational safety
The use of drones not only enhances efficiency but also significantly reduces human risk. Automated data collection and digital reporting enable precise maintenance planning and support improved decision-making. Alrais highlighted that the technology lays the foundation for future integration with artificial intelligence to analyse captured imagery, further optimising operational performance.

Vikas Sardana, Acting Managing Director of Keolis MHI, noted: “We are proud to support RTA’s vision for a smarter, safer, and more efficient transport system. This development reflects our shared commitment to innovation, which prioritises both operational performance and team safety. By adopting advanced technologies, we set modern benchmarks for excellence in rail transport operations.”
This initiative aligns with RTA’s 2024–2030 strategy, which emphasises sustainability, innovation, and service excellence. It also supports the UAE’s National Innovation Strategy, reinforcing the country’s global position as a leader in advanced technologies. By incorporating drones into metro operations, Dubai strengthens its predictive maintenance capabilities, extends asset lifecycle performance, and sets new standards for smart infrastructure.
Smart mobility
As Dubai continues to champion smart mobility solutions, the deployment of drone technology underscores the emirate’s commitment to innovation-driven excellence. Dubai Metro is not only adopting global best practices but is actively shaping the future of urban transport safety and efficiency.
The initiative exemplifies how advanced technology can transform inspection processes, enhance safety, and contribute to the emirate’s broader vision for digital transformation and smart infrastructure.
